This is probably the eternal favorite among most Konkanis and is also a very simple recipe.

1 cup Tuvar Dal
4 cups water
4 large green chillies slit
Salt to taste
For Seasoning:
2 teaspoons oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
2 red chillies - break into bits
2 sprigs curry leaves
1 big pinch asafoetida (hing) powder

Wash dal well and cook with water in pressure cooker (about 4 whistles). Mash dal a bit and keep on a flame. Add green chillies and allow it to boil for about 3 minutes.

Prepare seasoning by heating oil in a small pan. Add mustard seeds. When they begin to splutter, add red chillies, curry leaves and asafoetida. Pour seasoning into dal and remove from flame.

Variation: Cut 4 tomatoes into fine bits and add along with green chillies to make an interesting and tasty variation.
